Kõwhaiwhai elements - inspired by the environment

Kei te mihi nui ki a koe - greetings to you

Following the completion of a Toi Maori Course at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) in 2005, Tania Gallop and Karena Shannon took up Tutor Shane Graham's challenge and set up their card making venture - Kõwhaiwhai Tõku Rua.

Their Kaupapa: "to promote Te Ao Maori and Toi Maori through the medium of Kõwhaiwhai." A passion for traditional and contemporary Kõwhaiwhai elements motivates their work which is inspired by the environment and all resources - cards and bookmarks have been produced from their original designs.

While increased work and whãnau commitment saw Tania retire from the sales and marketing aspects of the business in early 2007, she continues to support and be involved in resource development as time allows.

Karena Shannon at Kõwhaiwhai Tõku Rua

Karena continues to develop, promote and sell KTR products throughout Aotearoa e.g. Te Papa Museum Shop Wellington, Toi Mana Maori Gallery Christchurch, Auckland Museum Shop, Tete Kura Arts Greymouth, Te Raukura Gallery Rotorua, Pataka Gallery Lower Hutt etc.

To date KTR has developed and produced two sets of all occasion Greeting Cards and a set of 4 Bookmarks from their Kõwhaiwhai boards. The 4th set of Xmas card designs was recently completed and a set of resources to celebrate Matariki - Maori New Year, are now available.

Karena aims to increase product exposure and streamline ordering processes via this user friendly website.
